1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.
9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) 16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.
At Awaken Church we have been studying the Authority of Scripture and the importance of trusting in and believing in the Word of God. And in believing, reading and studying the Scriptures. Yesterday at Awaken I encouraged those in attendance to read, reflect, study, and apply God's Word DAILY! We should be in God's Word everyday.
Beginning today, I will make a post each day on a passage of Scripture. These posts are designed to encourage you to be in God's Word and to begin studying for yourself the Scriptures. For those that already have a daily plan for reading, let this be an encouragement to keep reading and being faithful to God's Word. For those that haven't been reading the Scriptures, may these posts be a starting point for reading. Let me encourage you to read and study alongside me and to reflect on what God wants you to know from His Word. We ALL start somewhere in reading. If you haven't been reading, don't worry. Begin today!
Today's reading (see above) comes from John 1:1-18 ESV. Begin by reading the words to yourself either silently or aloud (ready go). After reading, highlight in your Bible all the times Christ is mentioned, whether as 1) The Word, 2) The Light, 3) He or Him, 4) A man, 5) Son, or as 6) Jesus Christ. Then, reflect on v. 8, "He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light."
Remember, that this life is not about us but about Christ. We are to work towards bringing God glory through our life. We have been bought at a price and should work towards honoring God with our life. How does your work, your relationship with others, and the way you treat your family and friends honor God? Remember you represent the light of Christ so let your light shine!
Second, reflect on v. 12 "But to all who did receive him, who believe in his name, he gave the right to become children of God." In reading scripture look for key words that represent the relationship we share with Christ. In verse 12 highlight the words receive and believe. We are to receive the Word of God as a free gift. We are to receive the blood of Christ, as the forgiveness of our sins, as a free gift. And in receiving, begin believing on the name of Jesus.
Lastly, focus on the words grace and truth in v. 14-18. The Holy Spirit helps us, in reading God's Word, to be filled with an understanding of grace and with a spirit of truth. Allow God to speak to you and to help guide your life.
Tomorrow we will read from John 1:19-28 on the testimony of John the Baptist. Read ahead and add to the discussion on Facebook (Awaken Church Florida) or to this post at our church website at https://www.awakenchurchinfo.com/blog.
Be blessed and KEEP READING!
