We Are Called to Help Those In Need

October 16, 2018

Acts 20:35 ESV

In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

Galatians 6:2 ESV

Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

Luke 6:38 ESV

Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

We are called to help those in need.  Last weekend, our neighbors in north Florida and Georgia were impacted by Hurricane Michael.  The storm has left many without power, clean running water, and the everyday necessities for living.  There are many who could use our help.  And though we pray for them during this difficult time, I believe we are called to do more.  We are called to be the hands and feet of Christ.

Last year our church was BLESSED with an outpouring of support by churches throughout the east coast as we recovered from the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.  Churches we didn't even know contacted our church and delivered, some personally, water, supplies, and food items.  Some sent monetary gifts to help with gas and other costs as we worked to help our people in need.  Many of our people were able to receive water, food items, and support during that difficult time from the donation of churches willing to help.  Additional items left were then given to Candlelight Christian Academy families or kept in storage.

It is time for us, as a church, to pay it forward and give back.

I am coordinating this week with Converge, local churches in the Panhandle, and pastors to evaluate the needs of those in that area.  Additionally, I am communicating with volunteers from our area who are planning to visit friends and family in and around the Florida Panhandle.  A delivery, one way or another, will be made this weekend into the beginning of next week.

Those wanting to donate to the cause, before the delivery, may bring cases of water, baby wipes, bleach, sponges (for cleaning), and/or paper towels to the church on Friday night.  We will be collecting items during our Friday Night Lights meeting from 6-8 p.m. Donations may be dropped off beginning at 5 p.m. at Candlelight on Friday.  Monetary donations will also be accepted to give to a local church in the Panhandle.  Online donations should be given through the American Red Cross by visiting

Awaken Church has a large supply of battery powered fans and radios that will be delivered this weekend as well.  Along with whatever donations and gifts are collected on Friday.

Thank you for your willingness to help those in need.  Please continue to pray for friends and family affected by the storm.  Pray that God encourages upon our hearts to help as well.

I hope to see you on Friday for prayer and study.

Pastor Joe
